My GPS Sent Me Somewhere Trucks Can’t Go

Last updated:

If you’re currently facing a low bridge or a restricted road: stop, don’t attempt it, and don’t reverse blind. Find somewhere to turn around legally even if that means waiting for assistance. A bridge strike is a career event; twenty minutes stopped is not.

Right now

  1. Stop before the obstruction, hazards on.
  2. Check the posted clearance against your actual height, including any reefer unit or load overhang, not the tractor spec.
  3. Don’t reverse without a spotter on a road you don’t know.
  4. Look for a legal turnaround: a commercial yard, a wide intersection. Ask locally if you have to; someone has seen this before.
  5. Call for assistance rather than attempting something marginal. Police would far rather redirect a truck than clear a bridge strike.

Why it keeps happening

Consumer navigation optimises for cars. It doesn’t know your height, weight, length or whether you’re carrying hazmat, and it will route you down a residential street to save four minutes.

Truck-specific navigation accounts for clearances, weight limits, restricted roads and hazmat routing. It’s the single most under-bought piece of equipment in owner-operator trucking, and the failure mode is expensive.

Where it goes wrong even with truck navigation

  • Height set wrong. Entered once, then a reefer unit or a taller trailer changed it.
  • The last mile. Truck routing gets you to the area; the facility approach is often where the low bridge is.
  • Recent changes. Construction and temporary restrictions lag in map data.
  • Overriding it. Taking a shortcut you can see on a car map.

Before the trip

Check the delivery approach specifically, not just the destination. Many facilities have one viable truck route in, and the broker or receiver will tell you if asked. It’s a question worth adding at booking for anywhere unfamiliar.

Where Hey Bubba! fits

Hey Bubba! is an AI back-office automation platform for fleets. Facility access details are confirmed with the broker at booking and attached to the load, so the approach is known before the driver is looking at a low bridge.
