I Can’t Find Truck Parking

Last updated:

If you’re short on hours right now, the priority is somewhere legal and safe within your remaining time, not somewhere ideal. Below are the places capacity usually is, then how to stop the problem recurring.

Right now

  1. Truck stops off the main corridor. The ones directly on the interstate fill first. Five miles off frequently has space.
  2. The receiver or shipper. Many allow overnight parking if you’re delivering in the morning. Worth a call; it’s underused because people assume no.
  3. Rest areas, with the caveat that many have time limits and enforcement varies.
  4. Industrial parks and distribution areas, where local rules allow. Check signage carefully.
  5. Paid reservation networks. Costs money, and it’s cheaper than a violation. Truck stop finder.

The timing

Parking fills from late afternoon onward. By 7pm on a weekday, corridor truck stops in busy regions are full. The realistic window is earlier than most people plan for, which means the decision to stop has to be made before you’re tired.

Plan it into the day, not at the end

The recurring version of this problem is caused by planning the driving and treating parking as a thing that will work out. It works out until the day it doesn’t, and that day costs you a violation or a night somewhere unsafe.

Identify two candidate stops before you set off: a target and a fallback thirty minutes earlier. It costs five minutes and removes the whole category of problem.

When the appointment causes it

An early morning delivery in a congested area with no nearby capacity is a parking problem created at booking. Worth checking before accepting freight into areas you know are tight, and worth pricing accordingly.

Where Hey Bubba! fits

Honestly: parking isn’t something Bubba solves. What it affects is upstream: Hours of Service are checked before a load is booked, so you’re less likely to be looking for parking with forty minutes left on the clock.
