I Don’t Have Time to Search Load Boards
Last updated:
Searching competes directly with driving, and driving is the part that pays. So the board gets checked at the truck stop, in the evening, and between other things, which means you’re seeing what’s left rather than what was posted.
What the timing costs
Good freight posts early and covers fast, frequently within twenty minutes. A load that appeared at 6:40am and covered by 7:05 was never available to someone checking at nine.
So it isn’t that you find fewer loads. It’s that you systematically see a worse selection than carriers who are looking continuously, and the gap compounds every week.
The second cost is the countering
When search time is scarce, negotiation is the first thing dropped. Ten minutes countering on a load worth $200 more, while three others go uncovered, is a rational trade. Made every day, it’s most of the margin. More on rates.
Three ways carriers solve it
Narrow drastically. Two or three lanes, a handful of brokers you’ve built with. Less searching because more freight comes to you. Slow to build and it works.
Pay someone. A dispatcher or dispatch service does the searching. Fast to arrange, and the cost is either salary or a percentage of gross.
Automate it. The search runs continuously without anyone doing it, including at 6:40am. Works when the problem is volume rather than judgement.
Which fits depends on whether you’re short of hours or short of relationships. If it’s hours, the first option takes years and the other two work now.
What doesn’t work
Trying harder. Every carrier in this position has already tried checking the board more often, and the constraint is that you’re driving. That’s not a discipline problem.
Where Hey Bubba! fits
Hey Bubba! is an AI back-office automation platform for fleets. Search runs continuously across DAT, Truckstop.com, 123Loadboard and direct broker networks, filtered on your lanes, equipment, hours and rate floor, and it counters on loads you’d have accepted at posted rate for lack of time.
Frequently asked questions
Mostly early morning, and good ones often cover within twenty minutes.
Yes: a dispatcher, a dispatch service, or automated search. The trade-offs are cost, speed to set up, and who ends up owning the broker relationships.
Not safely by hand. Either someone searches for you, or it’s automated.
