Can AI Find and Book Loads for My Truck?

Last updated:

Most of it, yes. AI can search load boards continuously, call and email brokers, negotiate against a floor you set, book the load, handle the paperwork and answer check calls. What it doesn’t do is judgement: deciding whether to fight a claim, whether a broker relationship is worth protecting, or what to do when something genuinely unusual happens.

What it does today

Finds freight. Continuous search across load boards and broker networks, filtered on your lanes, equipment, hours and rate floor, including at 6am when the good loads post.

Calls brokers. Real phone calls, not a chatbot, with multi-turn conversation by phone, email and text.

Negotiates. Opens above your floor, counters using market data, holds the line. Works several brokers in parallel on the same lane, which a person can’t.

Books and files. Rate confirmation parsed and checked against what was agreed, documents indexed to the load, invoicing prepared.

Answers check calls. Reads position from your ELD and responds. Calls the driver first if the position is stale.

What it doesn’t do

Commercial judgement. Whether to accept an unusual liability clause, whether to eat a loss to keep a shipper, whether this broker is worth building with.

Genuine exceptions. A breakdown, a safety incident, a hostile broker, a rate below your minimum. Those stop and come to a person: by design, not limitation.

Relationships. The reason a broker calls you first when they have good freight isn’t the negotiation. It’s the ten years.

Drive. Worth stating plainly, since “AI trucking” gets conflated with autonomous vehicles constantly. This is back-office automation. Someone still drives.

You decide how much it does alone

This is the part people assume is fixed and isn’t. You can have every load brought to you to approve or decline, or let it book automatically within limits you define: lanes, equipment, rate floor, maximum deadhead. Different trucks can run different settings.

Escalation applies regardless of mode. Below your rate floor, non-standard terms, breakdown, safety alert, or a flagged account: it stops.

Where it works well, and where it doesn’t

Works well when the bottleneck is volume: spot freight, repeatable lanes, standard equipment, and more loads than hours to work them.

Works less well when the work is mostly relational: contract freight with direct shippers, highly specialised loads, or an operation where the value sits in a broker book built over years.

If your problem is “I don’t have time,” this helps. If your problem is “I don’t know which brokers to call,” it helps less, and a good dispatcher helps more.
