Diesel prices today

Every price here is the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) weekly retail on-highway diesel survey — the same DOE diesel index written into most broker and shipper fuel surcharge clauses. We display what the EIA reports; we don't estimate or adjust it.

Surcharge per mile = (current DOE/EIA price − your contract's base price) ÷ your truck's MPG. Most lane agreements reset the surcharge weekly against this same index, so the number you lock in Monday should match what's published here that week.

The EIA survey is a regional retail average, not every individual truck stop's posted price. Brand, location, card-lock discounts, and local competition all move the pump price up or down from the regional number — use this index for surcharge math, not as a quote for a specific station.

State and local fuel taxes are the biggest driver, followed by distance from refineries and pipeline terminals, and regional supply and demand. That's why two neighboring states can show noticeably different prices in the same week.

Match it to what your contract actually references. Many agreements key off a specific state or PADD district rather than the national number — this page breaks prices down by state for exactly that reason. A carrier running the Gulf Coast on a national-average surcharge can be underpaid for weeks when regional prices run ahead of the national figure.
